This project will create a state-of-the-art healthcare educational facility for Downstate Medical Centers’ College of Nursing and will be the organizing element of both the curriculum and campus of College of Nursing. The new Learning Resource Center facility will be able to run and record simulations of typical Med/Surg (low fidelity) Beds, ICU Beds, Isolation Room and Labor and Delivery Room. To support this simulation technique, which is the advanced modality in nursing training, the Learning Resource Center will utilize cutting edge AV/IT technology in conjunction with the latest computerized mannequins operated from a control center. The suite’s central open plan will serve as a didactic space with flexible layout options for classroom instruction and hands-on training at mobile tables. A series of carefully baffled new skylights will flood this previously windowless space with diffused, glarefree natural light. A pictorial narrative on the history of nursing along the walls offers a unique graphic identity to the space from both inside and outside the suite.
