Independent schools present a particular design challenge. They also present great opportunities for innovative architectural solutions. Innovation is important to independent schools, which are expanding, often within the confines of older buildings on a tightly confined campus.
Distinguished by tradition, small classes and the nurturing of strong ties between adults and children, their educational expectations are high. So, too, are their expectations for the design of their campuses and facilities. To meet these expectations, NK Architects begins its design and master planning process by going “back to school” to learn exactly who will use the facilities and how that use will reflect the school’s often highly individualized educational philosophy.
We collaborate with students, faculty and administrators to design specialized buildings that meet specific and often complex educational and social criteria. We meet with parents to ensure that our ideas mesh with theirs, and we meet with trustees and development officers to understand the economies and how funds are raised. Sensitive to the fact that fundraising often becomes a design issue, we are skilled at communicating our plans to potential donors and designing well-defined spaces that honor their contributions.
Because independent schools are dynamic institutions serving generations of students, we feel a special sense of connection to each of our independent school clients. We form long-term working partnerships that, through architecture, stimulate learning and enhance community.
