The New Jersey EcoComplex is a 32,000 square foot research and education facility that promotes economic development in southern New Jersey. The project was initiated through a joint venture between Rutgers University, Stevens Institute of Technology and Burlington County. A major component of the building’s design is the utilization of passive solar and other ‘green’ technologies. A grand galleria provides common space for researchers, educators and administrators as well as the local community. The central galleria serves as an organizing element for the building’s major functions of research, education and administration. The south wall of the galleria is full-height glass with solar screens that blocks out summer sun yet allows winter sun to heat the floor slabs for a passive radiation system, while also providing indirect natural light into the galleria.
