Chatham Day School Kicks off Season with New Addition

NK Architects would like to congratulate Chatham Day School on their new addition, which opened for the start of the 2016-2017 school year. The school hosted a small ceremony to commemorate the opening on September 8th, with eighth grade students cutting the ribbon to welcome students, faculty and parents into their new Middle School building. The expansion will provide new spaces to facilitate and encourage learning and curiosity, engage students academically and reinforce the School’s culture and traditions.

The addition will serve as the “home base” for the Middle School and includes four new academic classrooms, a new Middle School learning commons, a new STEAM Suite (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math), as well as a full-service kitchen and dining hall that will serve the entire student body. In addition, there will be a new performing arts space, which will open next month.

Our design approach for this project is to create spaces that spark inspiration, imagination and innovation, encouraging students to become both independent learners and team players.

One of the goals from the onset of the project was to create an environment that would physically enhance the school’s sense of community and provide opportunities for the creation of new traditions – one of which is facilitated by way of a two-story stone-clad feature wall, with 240 niches, which accommodates photos of each of CDS’ students.
