NK Helps Fight Hunger at the 2023 Canstruction Event

Published November 6, 2023

In a stride to end hunger in our community, NK joined six teams at the Morris Museum to participate in New Jersey’s 2023 Canstruction event. For over 20 years, NK has been proudly participating in Canstruction, joining the fight against hunger! This all-day build showcased the creativity of multiple architecture firm teams who took can-building to the next level. This year, our team was honored to win the Structural Integrity award for our innovative and challenging design.

Each team interpreted this year’s theme of “New Beginnings Towards a Green Future” in a fun and unique way. Our team chose to replicate mushrooms in their natural environment, depicting the idea of a "Mushroom City," raising awareness around the importance of mushrooms in our ecosystems. We were fascinated by the increased use of mycelium bricks as an emerging material in the Construction and Architectural industry to create sustainable buildings. Through our brainstorming process, it became evident how much mushrooms can contribute to a greener future.

We would like to congratulate our team who put in a great amount of effort to bring our idea to life and to all other teams who participated and won awards for their design. Together, we have donated over 17,000 cans and non-perishable food items to the Community Food Bank of New Jersey helping so many families across NJ! We are grateful for and thank all of our sponsors and donors that made this event possible and of course AIA Newark & Suburban Architects and the Morris Museum for hosting such a successful event!
